Happy Happiness (Tuesday, November 20, 2007)

Well, today is a happy day. First, I'd like to wish Jason a very happy birthday. Today, I also managed to successfully demonstrate my particle filter project in robotics (to the amazement of my professor). And of course, it is now officially the start of my Thanksgiving holiday, and tomorrow, I depart for Williamsburg for the balance of the week.

I may do a long technical post about particle filters eventually, but not right now. Instead, I will talk about Dexter, a series on Showtime, that Jason encouraged me to acquire on DVD from Netflix. Dexter is a series about a psychopath, employed as a forensic analyst by the Miami police. He's also a serial killer who targets bad people. Some of the things that Dexter says are eerily close to things that I've said. Fortunately, I'm not crazy, and I don't feel an uncontrollable urge to kill. I also can't stand the blood of which he is so enamored. A few of the characters, like the lieutenant and Dexter's sister (a cop in the department) sort of irritate me, though I'm sure the lieutenant will get hers, and the sister will eventually grow some spine. Creepy as he is, I like Dexter, his girlfriend, and particularly his father, also a cop, who appears exclusively in flashbacks, and gives Dexter advice on controlling his urges, and putting them to good use. A little gruesome for my taste — I wouldn't want any of these people over for dinner. But it is definitely a clever series, and after the first two episodes, I'm really looking forward to the rest.
