Harry Potter Park in 2009 (Thursday, May 31, 2007)

Oh wow. I know where I'll be spending my 2009 Winter vacation... Universal Studios is opening a Harry Potter theme park in Orlando. Who wouldn't want to study potions at Hogwarts or visit the village of Hogsmeade and drink butterbeer at the Three Broomsticks. I can only hope that they do a complete recreation of Diagon Alley — can you imagine? Every shop described in the books could be reproduced selling souvenir replicas of all the magical items. And the reproductions would sell just as well in our world as the real items do in the Harry Potter world. I wouldn't mind having a plush snowy owl, and I'd love to have the awe-inspiring experience of choosing a wand at Ollivander's.

And rides... the trip to Vault 713 at Gringotts was practically a roller coaster ride in the book... wouldn't it make for an amazing subterranean amusement park ride? And imagine a Quidditch themed ride! And each challenge from the Tri-Wizard Tournament could have an attraction — I would love to see a huge maze!

There is a huge opportunity for them here, and a million things they could do. They probably won't do even a fraction of what my imagination demands, but even a little bit would be amazing. If Busch Gardens' pale reflection of Europe can bring Europe alive, and if Disney World's Animal Kingdom can make you feel like you're on the African Savanna, then Universal should be able to bring Harry Potter to life. Can you tell I'm excited?
