Virginia Democratic Primary (Sunday, June 11, 2006)

The other interesting thing I learned about at the fair is that this coming Tuesday is the Democratic primary election here in Virginia, where we get to vote for the person who will run against George Allen for United States Senate. We get to choose between Harris Miller and Jim Webb, each of which seem to have their pros and cons... in fact, I haven't decided which way I'm going to vote. One thing is for sure: We desperately need to get George Allen OUT of office before he can contribute any further to the destruction of our society.

What I've learned so far is that Jim Webb is a Marine veteran who served during Vietnam, and was Secretary of the Navy under Ronald Reagan (and this is our Democratic candidate??), as well as having been a lawyer and author. He is running on the Democratic ticket because he opposes the war in Iraq and vaguely supports the notion of equality and fairness on social issues, though I can't find his specific stance on such fundamental issues as a woman's right to choose about abortion, and the right of two individuals to marry, regardless of their sexual orientation. His other ideas seem to be relatively moderate — conservative, but not unreasonable.

Harris Miller, on the other hand, is an old-school Democrat who amuses me. Miller has been involved with the Northern Virginia high-tech sector for a while, which means he's at least aware of some of the issues that are important to me. Like Webb, his web site doesn't really go into Miller's position on some of the fundamental issues that matter to me, so I'm still withholding judgement. Miller seems to have the guts to take on the institution a little more than Webb... and I am certain the institution needs that sort of confrontation.

I've downloaded a debate between the two candidates from the WTOP radio web site, and I'm going to listen to that and hopefully be able to determine their positions on some of the issues I am interested in. Then, I will need to decide which candidate is most likely to be able to defeat Allen. And that's the problem... my guess is that I'm going to decide that Miller is right in line with my views, and that Webb is only a little further left than Allen and the Bush-ites, but that Webb is the one who is likely to be able to draw enough of the red-neck, country, hick, fascist Virginian voters who put Allen in office to begin with. I can only hope that this is Webb's strategy, and that the reality is that he is an old fashioned conservative who knows that our private lives are none of the government's business.

The important thing, of course, is to vote! Even a moderate conservative would be better than the right-wing Christian conservatives who are terrorizing our Republic now. More analysis to follow...
