New Entertainment System and Spam Filters (Friday, December 2, 2005)

I haven't updated for a really long time, but that is because I'm coming down to my last days of school. After nine long years of college, I will finally have something to show for it after a presentation this afternoon, and two exams in two weeks. In the meantime, I've been busy with work, and trying to get all of my HD problems solved — in the form of a new 50" Hitachi TV (50VF820), that I've been very happy with, though I'm surprised that the fans make quite so much noise. It's not enough noise to bother me while I'm watching something, but with the sound off or the playback paused, it's very conspicuous. Also, I got a new 1000 Watt Onkyo 7.1 receiver, and yes, that means nearly all of my living room is now covered in speakers.

On a more technical note, I've been receiving the same stupid spam to the e-mail address listed on my whois entry repeatedly over the past several weeks, so yesterday, I decided it was time to figure out how to use ACLs with Exim. I set up rules to reject e-mails that claim to be from, but originate from somewhere other than localhost, or any e-mail that comes from one of my secondary e-mail aliases with "Re:" in the Subject line (clearly it can't be a reply, because I don't send out e-mails from those addresses!).

Once I get the filters dialed in, I'll post the details of how I accomplished it. This is definitely a step forward though, because it rejects it during the original SMTP session, rather than accepting the e-mail, and rejecting it later during delivery (like using procmail). That means that spam mailers will know right away that I'm not accepting their spam, and I don't have to worry about bouncing stuff to the wrong place.

As always the weeks leading up to Christmas are going to be hectic — I'm not even a fraction of the way through the necessary shopping — so it's likely you won't see another update for another few weeks. After the semester ends, I'm hoping to post some of the academic stuff I've accomplished. And then a few weeks break... get myself a diploma... then back to the grind for another degree!
