esound and Firefox (Friday, October 7, 2005)

Of all the places to find a solution to my sound in Firefox woes on Ubuntu... the dslreports.com forums had the answer to my question. Firefox actually does know how to deal with esd, the Enlightenment Sound Daemon, that Ubuntu uses for sound. The problem is that it wants a .1 version of the library instead of a .0 version. So according to the forum, it's as simple as creating a soft link from libesd.so.0 to libesd.so.1, and to my amazement, that actually works:

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libesd.so.0 /usr/lib/libesd.so.1

If this doesn't work, you may need to explicitly set FIREFOX_DSP="esddsp" in /etc/mozilla-firefox/mozilla-firefoxrc.

In other news, I finally got all my logs into the database so I can do meaningful queries... unfortunately, it's starting to look like my system just doesn't have enough memory to handle queries into a database of that size. I shutdown mysqld, and suddenly my system roared back to life. This will require further investigation.
