Prisoner of Azkaban and Shrek and more Microsoft (Friday, May 21, 2004)

Last night, I came home from work, had a snack, took a nap, and read a little from Prisoner of Azkaban, in anticipation of the new movie. Then Claire came over, and we went down to Manassas. First we went to Kohl's and did something clothing shopping. We picked out a couple of nice t-shirts that were pretty cheap, and I picked up a new pair of Levi's. We also found a pair of black jeans, Polo, I think, but the size I normally wear was about two inches too big in the waist in this brand, and we couldn't find anything smaller. We also found a pair of shorts for me, though apparently, I have to find shorter socks to wear with them (where was I when the fashions changed? Arrrggh, I'm getting old).

After shopping, we went to the theater, and saw Shrek 2... guess I should write a review of that. And Shrek. Okay, I'm going to the movies too much. Let's just say it was really funny, and Puss in Boots is my hero. We were going to go to Uno's for dinner, but we were so loaded up on popcorn and Gummibaerchen (!) that we decided to pass on that and just go back to my place.

At home, there was nothing on TV, so we put it on the National Geographic Channel and watched a show about crazy white guys in India chasing King Cobras, followed by a show on Discovery about the volcano, Krakatao. For dinner, I ended up re-heating the leftovers from Sweetwater from the other night, along with excessive quantites of macaroni and cheese. It was yummy all around. After dinner, we vegged out for a little while, until finally I decided it was time for bed, and sadly, Claire had to go home. Apparently, her father doesn't approve of her spending nights with me while she's going out with Bob. Fancy that. I kinda don't approve of that either. She's needs to modify her "relationship" with Bob... well, I suppose she's already done the modifying, so she needs to tell him about it. Oh well, it isn't my problem. She's a big girl, and she can do what she wants.

So this morning, I was surprised by a call from Russ Simpson, the hiring manager at Microsoft. Apparently, he couldn't wait to hear back from me via Karolina, the recruiter, so he called me directly. He sounded so disappointed when I told him I couldn't take the position. But at least he was understanding. I feel really bad, but I think this is for the best. The last thing I want to do is throw out everything I have, go there, and then not like it, and throw that away too. Then a little while later, Karolina called, trying to find some way to get me to change my mind. Unfortunately, the things I don't want to leave behind can't be replaced, even by Microsoft. My family and my friends are all here, my home is here. I want to finish school — and I am, after all, the new president of Alpha Chi. And besides, I don't know if I want to give up my Linux, Java, and Open Source. But Russ said that if I decide that I want to work at Microsoft, that I can re-apply any time I want. Maybe after I get my degree, I'll do that. We'll just have to see. In the meantime, I'm happy here, and I am not ready to throw that away.

In lighter news, I finally got Sugarcult: Start Static copied (have I mentioned that Pretty Girl is an awesome song?), and I think I may do some backups today too, since I remembered to bring in my blank CDs. After that, if I haven't decided to blow off the rest of the day, I'll start on the LDAP project. While I don't really want to work on the XA stuff, if Sumeet ever gets off his lazy, dead ass and reviews my part of the spec, I'll check that in too.

Tonight, I'm making pizza with Claire, and then after a quick stop at the fabric store, it's off to Joe's new place for garb making night. That probably won't go too late, so maybe I'll get to see Claire again afterwards. Hmmm, I wonder if that's a good idea? I don't want Claire to get Brian overload and change her mind again. Wouldn't that suck. Anyway, I suppose it's work time, since I've decided to stay at webMethods. Adios for now!
